For the last month, I have been having fun finding out who some of these people are and where they had been. Some were relatives and some were not, for instance:<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 118px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_Ok9GgcRzrFQ/SrpHXvROnuI/AAAAAAAAAtM/q-w2UJ75Aag/s320/oliverwest.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5384694777626140386" /> I found this gentleman and the notice of his death in there. His full name was Oliver Washington Best. He was born in Kentucky, was 6'1" tall with a fair complexion, blue eyes and gray hair. He was a widowed farmer, could read and write as well. He enlisted in the Army on July 12, 1863 as a Private in Columbia, California and served in Company H of the California 6th Infantry Regiment. He was discharged on October 25, 1865 with a pension of $12.00 a month and made his home in Chico, California.

On October 12, 1905 he was admitted to the US National Home for Disabled Soldiers in Los Angeles, Ca (Sawtelle Pacific Branch) with partial paralysis of his left side. He died August 14, 1907 of paralysis and is buried at Western Branch.

I don't know how he fits into my family. Perhaps at some time or another he was a neighbor. Maybe in Missouri. I just don't know. It was fun though learning about him. Here is what I learned about his military unit.

6th Infantry Regiment, Company H, 1864-1865 (Military Unit Designation)
Date of Organization:
March 4, 1864

Date of Disbanding:
October 25, 1865

Geographic Location(s):
Benicia Barracks

I will research him more. I wonder if 100 years after I am gone, someone will try to know me. :-)

You just have to LOVE Obituaries!

In my opinions, Obits are one of the great finds in genealogy. You can glean so much information from them. The facts are great but the personal stuff about their interests and involvements are the best. If you are seasoned at this, I apologize but for the folks newer to the game here is a great example of why you copy and keep all information and don't just pick the essential facts out and toss the rest.

What a bonanza here. We have LOTS of other resourses to look at now for more information about her family. As a Civil War junkie it is fascinating... Civil War Days and those surnames. BTW, the March 5 entry is about a Rober Elliott which is where I got started. Another BTW is whether or not I have ever recommended 2 of my favorite FICTIONALIZE Civil War books, Killer Angels by Michael Shara and Widow of the South by Robert Hicks. Please notice I stressed fictionalized. Both books took a lot of liberties but both can really give you a feel for their events since they are both based on so much truth. Sorry I digressed...

Bert Elliott

I am looking for the parents of Bert Elliott born 30 Mar 1881 Rockford Iowa and died 8 Mar 1947 Charlotte County Michigan. He married 9 Dec 1903 in Brookfield Michigan to; Mabel Catherine Walworth she was born 25 Mar 1884 Brookfield Michigan and died 9 Jul 1974 the had two Children (son) Carroll born 19 oct 1905 Charlotte Michigan and (daughter) Virene Elliott born 4 Jul 1917 Eaton Michigan

Tea for 2

I have spent many housr browsing this web site in spite of the fact I have never had any reason to actually look for someone in any of these places but I do love cemetaries and the stories they tell so I enjoy the virtual "tours" Tea for 2

What are some of your favorite links? K) and she had to wait 7 years to marry Cornelius. Daughter Molly/Mariet Wheeler married his brother Richard.

1850 census has George in Huron Co, OH with father Thomas D. Wheeler, his wife Elizabeth and others. By 1860 Thomas is in county poorhouse, wife and one daughter are in Cincinnati where wife cooks in a hospital, and George is in Lewis Co., KY married to Eliza/Louisa with baby. His older brother Joseph and other siblings were also there. He spent about a year in the army and is listed as a deserter 8-1862. He had a brother David and a David Wheeler joined and deserted just before he did. Interesting that 1870 census has a GW age 30 in Mecosta Co., MI with Elizabeth W. No other records found that seem likely to be him but in 1880 in same place Elizabeth lives with Joseph. In 1860 Lewis Co. and 1900 Mecosta Co. census Joseph's middle initial is A. Ages of George, Joseph and Elizabeth and places of birth are about right too. At any rate, looking at names and ages in 1850 and 1860 seems to confirm that this family is the right one. Thomas W. and his family had lived aro! und Mason Co. Ky in the early 1800s and he and brother Edward went to Huron Co. around 1820. Lots of info on these Wheelers on boards/trees.

Sarah Sallie Ann Elliott/Elliot
She was born in
1854 in Arkansas and died in Alabama. She had a sister, Martha M. Elliott, b.
1849 in Mississippi. I found her living with a Samuel and Annie Moore in the
1860 Randolph Co, AL census and the 1870 Clay Co, AL census. She married a John
W. Smith in AL. In the 1880 Calhoun Co, AL census, Sarah is married to John
and they have three sons, John, William and Marion.

I wanted to find out who her parents were, and what happened to them. And how
she and her sisiter came to be living with Sam and Annie Moore.

Gladys M Hamilton ( nee Elliott )
wife of Stanley Hamilton (who was a professional driver). Their children were possibly called Alec Hamilton and his sister Margaux. There may be family heirlooms in their homes consisting of Tudor furniture that was handed down in the will of Capt Robert Elliott ( died 1918 ) a vet. surgeon who was based in Putney. Also are there any relatives who desended from Capt Robert Elliott's second marriage to Minnie Elliott ( m. 1916 ). Are there any relatives decended from Robert's other daughter's marriage, Lucy M. Bowles ( nee Elliott ) who married Christopher Bowles in 1913 East Sheen.
Capt Robert Elliott disinherited his son Thomas Conyers Elliott ( which we are decendants of ). I am looking for any relatives alive today that could fill in gaps of our history. Apparently Capt Robert had a family tree that went back generations. There may some truth in the fact that there is a connection with the Conyers family as this is a surname used in our family. There is also talk of Judge Jeffers ring being in the posession of Capt Robert Elliott ( 1857-1918), and connections with Sir Rowland Hill.
Are there any decendants around from Elizabeth Margaret Annie Outhwaite ( nee Elliott b.1860's )and had a daughter called Gwendoline Conyers Outhwaite- Walter J Outhwaite died in 1890's who was the father. Elizabeth was the daughter of Thomas Elliott vet based in Stockton on Tees. Finally I'm looking for desendants of Robert Elliott ( b. 1799-1856 durham ) of Middleton One Row (Teeside) He was a carpenter and married Margaret Hull who died in the 1880's. In particular desendants of Robert Elliott Junior ( Carpenter/joiner ) born abt 1839 who also married a Margaret There are graves of Elliotts at St George church Middleton One Row , Durham St.Oswalds, and Putney Vale cem Wandsworth, Holy Trinity Stockton on Tees and Oxbridge cem in Stockton. Is there anyone out there who can help or think they are related? If there is then you would know Robert Conyers Elliott ( 1931-2002 )who was organist/ harpichordist and teacher at the Royal Northern College of Music for many years. Gladys M Hamilton used to put Robert up when he was studying in London 1950's.
Richard Thomas Elliott
He was born abt. 1765 in Wake Co., NC and died 29 Jan 1863 in Carter Co., Tn. He married Elizabeth Bollinger on 23 Jan 1805 in Carter Co., Tn. She was born 1784 in Yancy Co., NC and died abt. 1862 in Carter Co., Tn. There childern are Barbara, Sarah Jane, Nancy Maryann, Catherine, John, David J., Peter Bollinger, Lucinda, William, Joseph Moses Dulaney. I have all the informantion on the children expcet Sarah Jane.

Pension application file for George W Wheeler
says he became ill in the winter of 1862 and was in several army hospitals for lung problems until that August, when he got sick furlough and expected to receive a disability pension. GWW stated that he went home to Clarksburg, Lewis Co., KY, lived in Cincinnati 1863-64, then went west to MI, AR and MO, residing in Arrow Rock, Saline Co., MO 1872-1886. A June 1889 note to the pension bureau gives his new address as St. Joseph, MO; he is on the 1890 veteran's list there. GWW said he had been too ill to work regularly since war and needed assistance from family and friends to get by. He was 5'11", 145 lbs., with fair skin, light brown hair and blue eyes. Pension was rejected.

George D. Elliott
manufacturer and dealer in harness and saddlery, Kewanee, Ill., was born at the United States Arsenal, Pittsburg, Pa., July 8, 1823. His parents, James, a Sergeant in the United States Army, and Mary (Mayhew) Elliott, natives of Durham, Eng., and Kennebec, Maine, respectively, were married at Mt. Pleasant, Ohio, and of the 11 children (nine sons and two
daughters) born to them, the subject of this sketch was the eldest but two. James came to America in 1818, and three years afterward entered the United States Army as a private soldier and served for a period of five years. He was an only child, and his father, who was a saddler to Lord Durham, gave him an academic education. The then Lord Durham was an extensive coal operator, and saddler Elliott, who had accumulated some money, invested it in the stocks of a rival mining company, which act so enraged his lordship that he withdrew his patronage from Elliott. The new coal company failed, and in 1826, the old gentleman followed his son to the United States. He located at Mt. Pleasant, Ohio, and died before the then current year.

After leaving the army, Sergeant Elliott returned to his trade of a saddler at Mt. Pleasant, and there remained up to 1854, at which time he came to Kewanee. A part of the farm upon which he settled here is now known as Elliott's Addition, and the rest of it was laid out by the parties to who he sold it, and is now known as "Morse's Addition to Kewanee."

The old gentleman removed to Chicago in 1870; was there during the great fire, and returned to Kewanee, where he died in July of the following year, aged about 76 years. His wife had died at Kewanee in 1868, aged 72 years.

George D. Elliott learned the trade of his father and of his grandfather, and, with the exception of a few years devoted to teaching in the public schools, has devoted his time to it. He was educated at Mt. Pleasant, Ohio, and was about 22 years of age when he began teaching. At the outbreak of the Mexican War, he entered the service of the United States as an artisan, and left Pittsburg in October, 1846, in the Quartermaster's Department for Mexico. At the end of about six months he returned to Pittsburg, where he was employed in the Government Arsenal until the close of the war, when he made his way back to Mt. Pleasant. In 1854 he made a trip of discovery in the West, and the following year brought his family to Kewanee. Three of his brothers were in the Union Army during the Rebellion, and one of them lost his life at the battle of Mission Ridge. Since coming to Kewanee, Mr. Elliott has held various offices, and at this writing (August, 1885) is serving his tenth year as a member of the School Board.

In politics he is a Republican, coming from the old Whig party; in religious view he is liberal, though identified more or less prominently with the Episcopal Church. He is a member of Kewanee Lodge, No. 159, F. & A. M., and holds the office of Scribe in Kewanee Chapter, No. 47.

At Cadiz, Ohio, April 4, 1849, he was married to Miss Adaline McCormick, a native of that town, and daughter of the Hon. Samuel McCormick, now deceased. I am about 1/3 of the way through re entering all my information that was lost in multiple computer crashes. I cannot believe how far that has come and how many years I have spent working on it. Who knew a simple homework assignment could become one of my life's passions.

Today was exciting while trolling census records for names, I believe I finally found my g-g- grandmother's surname. Of course it is one of those names that could be and was spelled a dozen different ways and I have spent the morning and part of the afternoon looking for clues as to who her family was. i am sure now that she had a brother Isaac and he had a wife Mae and they took my g-g-granfather in after his wife died. Try as I may though I can find no evidence of that family before 1920 though.

Here's the skinny: My g-g- grandfather was Briton/Britton/Britain L. Wilcox. I believe the L was for Levi (his father's name) He married Arvilla. I believe her surname was Truesdail/Truesdale/Truesdell. I found Britton living with Isaac and Mae in Bradford County, PA on the 1920 census. He was about 73 years old then and is listed as brother in law to Isaac and a widower. If anyone has any information on these families I would be SOOOO grateful, please drop me a line.

I get so wrapped up in these families. As I am entering them into my database I cringe when I see a family that survived 4 still births or last their 2 youngest children in a fire or to the influenza outbreak or whopping cough or whatever. I mourn the people I can't find too. I hate that these people were born, married, had children and lives and no one took the time to preserve their existence.

I am sure my children believe I am crazy but every name that I write down, every fact that I locate and preserve for me is a little triumph for those that have gone before. In each of those things is a little part of what I am made up of. I hope they know I appreciate that and will treasure whatever parts I can find.

Stumbling Blocks

Thought I would list a few of my deadends...

My grandfather's father was John Truman Elliott (b 1854) his parents were Simeon Elliott(b 1812) and an Eliza Jane Sparks. I am not posting the author since I don't give out anyones personal information wtihotu their permission...It's interesting in any case since Daniel is a particular stone wall for me!

The UNPROVEN THEORY of Daniel Elliott & His Ancestors

Daniel Elliott, made famous by his testimony at the Salem Witch Trials in 1692. He was born about 1665, most likely Marlborough Massachusetts. He states in his Witch Trials testimony that "he was 27 years of age or thereabouts." According to "Savages account of New England Genealogy", puts Daniel coming from Marlborough or Sudbury. In the General Court records for Sudbury and Marlborough, we know that a Mr. Elliot was living in Marlborough in 1661, he was one of the signers on a petition asking that taxes should be suspended until such time as a town could be established. We also find on the IGI a Mrs Daniel Elliot death about 1680 in the "Salem Area". The statement has been made in the "Loren S. Elliott" papers "Daniel Elliot, son of Daniel", and makes a further claim that the father of Daniel was "born ca. 1630". There is one Daniell Elliot found in Ides, Devon, England born 1636. He married Dorcas Pope 1659 in Ides, Devon, England. As of this date nothing has been located!
as to their arrival in America, but the search goes on for a passenger list with this couple on it. I doubt that one will be found, but the search goes on. The subtle clues are beginning to take form.

In 1690 a Daniel Elliot was killed by Indians, along with a George Ingersoll and others. In the testimony of Daniel Elliot at the Salem Witch trials, he was at the place of Nathaniel Ingersoll who was a relative of the George Ingersoll who was killed by Indians. Another clue?

In Josiah Temple' "History of Framingham Mass", he states that Daniel Elliott removed to the "Pope" farm after signing his grist mill at Oxford over to his 2 sons, James and Ebenezer. I believe that he was related to the Pope's by way of his mother Dorcas Pope. This has not been proven and one should not take these notes as proof at this time.

If we are to make the assumption that Daniel Elliot is the father of Daniel Elliot (of Salem) and Dorcas Pope is his mother then his ancestry can certainly be traced back to Devonshire, England.

If we follow this line of thinking, ie; Daniel and Dorcas (Pope) Elliot were the parents of Daniel Elliot of Salem fame, we will call Daniel of Devonshire the 1st Daniel.

1st Daniel christened April 3, 1636 Morten Hampstead, Devon, England, by Morten Hampstead Parish Register Vol 1, Baptisms 1603-1710, held by the Devon-Cornwall Record Society. His parents are listed as Daniell Elliot and Dorothy Southmead, daughter of William. Children born to them were Anne born April 12, 1635, and died April 14 of the same year, daughter Hannah born ? and Daniel born 1636. Daniel and Dorothy were married June 29, 1633 Morten Hampstead, England. Daniel was born 1599 to Richard Elliot and Amy Moxworthie. Richard was the son of John Elliot and Johanna Browne they were married about 1580. John Elliot was the son of Nycolas Elliot and unkown. Nycolas was the son of Richard Elliot and Dorothy ?.

Back to Massachusetts we find Daniel of Salem marriage to Hannah Cloyce, daughter of Peter Cloyce and Hannah Littlefield, parents Edmund and Annis(Agnes)Austin Littlefield. The children of Daniel and Hannah were Daniel JR, Ebenezer, James, John, Nathaniel, Jonathon, Peter & unknown son(died young). From the Essex Antiquarian, Daniel Elliot from Salem Village settled in Framingham 1693 along with the Coyce family, Daniel's step mother in law was found guilty as a witch but escaped and the Elliott and Cloyce families left Salem along with other family's named in the Salem Witch hunts. Daniel and his family moved once again about 1704 to Oxford where we find Daniel recieving the grist mill stones from Gabriel Bernon in 1715. Daniel Elliot handed over the grist mill to sons James and Ebenzer and it appears that some of the mill was sold to John Provender, brother to Sarah Provender who later married son Daniel JR. After leaving his grist mill we find he "removed to the Pope farm! ." The names of Daniel , father, Daniel JR and James Elliot appear on the propietors records. That of Daniel, the father, Sept 14, 1722 as the purchaser of fifty acres in the 3rd division, on both sides of the great brook, near Coffin's farm, that of Daniel JR, June 28, 1728 as the purchaser of 25 acres in the 5th division, adjoining the land of Daniel Elliot, that of James Elliot July 15 1734 as purchaser of twelve and 1/2 acres of land in the 6th division, adjoining to his other land, where he know lives. Land information is from "The History of Sutton Massachusetts from 1704-1876 by Hiram Averill Tracy & William Addison."

Please note that the history of Daniel, the father, is not proven and is only conjecture at this point. Although many clues are pointing some of us Elliot researchers to this conclusion, please do not take this a source or proof of ancestry. As more information is uncovered we will, of course, add to it to this story.

Today's Tidbit

I am trying to trace the Wilcox family in Bradford County, PA. Towanda, Pa.: Bradford Star Print, 1913-1915.)
Here are some marriages I found listed, none of which seem to pertain to me but someone might be able to use them.

Bradford County Marriages:

June 12, 1803- Sheffield Wilcox married Charlotte daughter of John and Hannah (Mallory) Hinman of Wysox(P6)

June 6, 1814- Rowland Wilcox of Albany married Elizabeth Van Etten of Spencer, NY (P84)

March 23, 1831- Wells Wilcox of Albany married Harriett H. Both of my parents had brown eyes. My brothers, sister and I all had blue. The odds that 2 brown eyed people (Bb) would have one blue eyed child are approximately 25%...My parents had 4! The odds of that happening are about 1/4 of 1%. My father's family were immigrants from Italy. My father and his brothers and sisters were first generation Americans. By the time I was wondering about the odds of all this, both of his parents were gone and in the time honored tradition of the Italian vendetta, most of his family was not speaking to each other. I was never able to do much sleuthing there but my mother's family...that's a different story. My mom's father had brilliant blue eyes and considering that my own sons have blue eyes in spite of the fact that my husband has brown (as do a good number of my nieces and nephews) they must be some determined genes.

In any case, that simple assignment opened up a world of wonder for me tracing my families' roots to find where I got my wings. I took a break from this for the past 3 years or so but am now back again searching and making tiny little discoveries. It is infinitesimally harder now though because the further back you go, the more difficult it is to find and or substantiate information.

Anyway, I thought I would try blogging some of this to see if anyone needs something that I have dug up (which may or may not) relate to my search and maybe someone will have something I can use. As I run across things that I feel may be of interest I will post them. Frustrations and przes alike!
